Plot

The narrator’s father, Seo Gwangsam, fails every time he runs for election, but he registers as a candidate before every election without fail. On one occasion he does not receive a single vote, ranking last among the candidates, but he still does not give up. He employs all sorts of illegal tactics during campaigning, such as intimidating voters and mobilizing his wealth and personal connections, but he always fails.

1972년 2월<지성>에 발표한 이제하의 단편소설이다. 작품은 1970년대 한국사회에 팽배했던 정치적 광기와 폭력, 억압 그리고 군중의 맹목을 주인공의 선거 출마와 낙선을 통해서 그려내고 있다. 작가는 작중 인물들을 통해 사람들이 현실을 지배하기 위해 무모하게 폭력을 사용하고 억압하지만 어떤 것들은 허무하게 사라지고 만다는 것을 보여준다.

This short story by Lee Ze-ha was originally published in the literary magazine Intelligence in 1972. It depicts the political violence, lunacy, oppression, and collective blindness that prevailed in Korean society in the 1970s, by focusing on a man who attempts in vain to gain votes for an election.
