This novel is a revised combination of the author’s two novellas, one of which was first published in three installments in Jogwang in 1936, and the other, first published in nine installments in the same journal in 1937. It paints the daily lives of about 30 residents of the area, and it is acclaimed as a masterpiece of Korean realist literature.
