In 1627, a Dutchman called Weltevree and his companions are shipwrecked on Jeju. They are placed under guard, then transported to the capital city, where they learn about the character, ethics, and philosophy of the Joseon people. Under the king’s orders, they are assigned to the city garrison, where they take part in constructing cannons. However, unable to abandon hope of returning to the Netherlands, Weltevree, who now goes by Bak Yeon, looks for a way to leave Joseon with his colleagues. Meanwhile, he and his comrades risk their lives to fight against enemy forces that have invaded Joseon.
