Plot

Signal, a theater company, is unable to obtain permission from the authorities to perform a play because it features terrorists. Frustrated by the political nature of the ban, the troupe’s leader insists on going ahead with the production, which is stopped after only two days. In the midst of the troupe’s disappointment, news arrives of the President’s death, causing the leader to collapse as if everything is over.

Time of the Beast by Kim Wonwoo (alternatively Kim Wonu) was first published in the spring issue of the quarterly magazine Munye Joongang in 1985, and then reissued as a standalone book later that year. The novel deals with Korean society in the late 1970s, a time when political regulations and oppression prevailed. Within the frames of the novel form, the author offers a topographical map of a culture that is being atrophied by political instability.
