Plot

The narrator plans to reside in Korea for a while to finish a book he had been writing in the United States. Looking for a place to stay, and requiring additional assistance, he contacts Ilmo, an old middle school teacher who is known for helping his former pupils in various ways. Ilmo introduces the narrator to Mr. Ha, who owns a hotel. When the book is completed, a launch party is held to celebrate its publication, and afterwards Ilmo asks the narrator about Mr. Ha. Despite having received a great deal of support from Mr. Ha, the narrator is quick to point out his flaws, namely his love of money.

1998년 출간된 제29회 동인문학상수상작품집에 수상작으로 수록된 이윤기의 단편소설이다. 작품은 사람이 사람을 이해하고, 보이지 않는 인간의 내면을 볼 수 있기 위해서는 급속한 현실의 변화에서 떨어져서 세계를 바라볼 수 있는 중심이 필요하다는 것을 말하고 있다.

Curve and Straight is the tie-in book for the 1998 Dongin Literary Award and contains the winning and shortlisted short stories. The prize-winning title story by Lee Yoon-gi attempts to show that, in order to understand others and be able to see their inner self, it is necessary to remain unshaken, deep down, by reality’s vicissitudes.
