Plot

On the walls of the 72 underground rooms of the Cheonsan Monastery, a vast number of beautifully decorated inscriptions and mystical paintings are discovered. The novel opens with the story of Kang Sangho, who uses his late brother’s records to investigate the Cheonsan writings and inform the public of their existence. Gradually, the truth behind the monastery, as well as personal desires, distorted histories engendered by political power, and the tragic reality of a mass slaughter begin to surface.
