1991년에 출간된 정현종 시인의 시선집이다. 작가의 대표시 60여 편이 수록되어 있다. 시선집의 제목인 '사람들 사이에 섬이 있다'는 작가의 대표시인 <섬>에서부터 따온 제목이다. 정현종은 첫 시집 <사물의 꿈>(1972)에서부터 관념적인 시들을 창작해왔으나, 1980년대 이후로는 생명 현상에 대한 공감을 다룬 시들을 발표해왔다. 생명의 황홀을 노래하며 화해의 세계를 지향하는 시인으로 평가된다.

Published in 1991, There Are Islands Between People contains over 60 poems by Chong Hyon-jong. The title of the book is taken from “Island,” a poem included in the collection. 
Chong began his literary career writing ideological poetry, as seen in his debut poetry collection, The Dream of Things (1972), but since the 1980s he has published poems expressing empathy for the phenomenon of life. His poetry is regarded by critics as evocative of life’s ecstasy and of reconciliation.
