Plot

The narrator’s father goes bankrupt, and the narrator works at a PC room. One day he starts to chat online with a woman whose ID is “the Divorcee.” She tells him that the Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung has killed himself. As they share their memories of the actor, the narrator becomes more interested in the woman, and they decide to meet in front of Chungmuro Theater, where he had seen the Leslie Cheung movie Days of Being Wild. The narrator shows up dressed in a black suit and a mask, as they had agreed, but when he sees several men dressed as he is, in what looks like a flash mob, he returns home.

2005년 출간된 김경욱의 단편소설집이다. 이 작품은 삶과 행위의 의미가 부재하고 있는 오늘날 젊은이들의 삶과 문화적 코드들을 절묘하게 포착하고 있다. 쓸모없는 기억, 무의미한 대화, 플래시몹 등을 통해 의미의 흐름으로부터 벗어나버린 것들의 유대라는 새로운 활기를 이야기한다.

Published in 2005, this short story collection by Kim Kyung-uk introduces nine of his stories, beginning with the title story “Leslie Cheung Is Dead?” In these stories, the writer delves into the meaninglessness of life to many young people in contemporary society, symbolized by Leslie Cheung, who killed himself on April Fool’s Day. The title story begins with the characters’ personal and yet insignificant memories, but it’s from this insignificance that the writer draws out their sense of solidarity and belonging, which ends with a flash mob, a visually representation of the limits and scope of their commonality.
