Plot

Daughter of a servant, Seon-bi runs away to Seoul after she is raped by the master, Jeong Deok-ho. She finds a job at a textile factory in Incheon, and partakes in the labor movement for the female workers who are being exploited until she dies. Meanwhile, Cheot-jjae, who is from the same village as Seon-bi, works as a longshoreman in Incheon. He meets Yu Shin-cheol, who helps him to leads a labor strike. During the strike, he witnesses the death of Seonbi, whom he used to love in his youth, and is overcome with anger and despair.

This is a novel by Kang Kyeong-ae, serialized in The Dong-A Ilbo from August 1 to December 22, 1934. It realistically depicts the issues of poverty and labor in 1930s Korea. With an obvious theme—the awakening of laborer—this novel is written in sensuous language and style.

1934년 8월 1일부터 12월 22일까지 <동아일보>에 연재된 강경애의 장편소설이다. 1930년대 빈곤과 노동문제를 사실주의적으로 묘사했다. 노동자의 각성이라는 뚜렷한 주제의식을 보여주고 있으며 감각적인 문체를 사용하고 있다는 평가를 받는다.
