Plot

Cheon Namseok is a reporter who goes missing, and Lieutenant Seon Uhyeon, who is investigating this missing person case, visits Yang Juho, the editor whom Cheon Namseok worked for. Yang seems dismissive of Cheon’s whereabouts, and he takes the lieutenant to a bar called Ieodo. There, Lieutenant Seon meets a strange woman, and they spend the night together. Several days later, Cheon’s dead body is found by the beach without any injury or marks.

1974년 <문학과지성>에 발표된 이청준의 장편소설이다. 제주도 인근에 실존하는 섬인 '이어도'를 소재로 하여 창작된 작품이다. 저항할 수 없는 인간의 운명을 다루며 사실과 허구 사이의 관계를 깊이 있게 통찰한 작품이라 평가된다.

This novel by Yi Chong-jun was published in the literary magazine Literature and Intellect in 1974, and it was made into a film by Kim Ki-young in 1977.  The story is set on Ieodo Island, a real island next to Jeju Island, and in blurring the distinction between reality and fiction, it relates the in-depth portrayal of people who are not able to run away from what has been dictated by fate.
