Plot

When her first love, Ju-wan, suddenly dies, the narrator lives in despair, reeling from the loss. The narrator’s friends who attended the same school in a small village on the outskirts of Ilsan—such as Ju-yeon, Song-i, and Su-mi—understand her despair and loss and try to comfort her. As much as the narrator suffers from her pain, her friends are enveloped in the anxiety and fear about the present and the future they feel as women in their 30s. The narrator and her friends do not escape the unstable reality but instead share their lives with each other and change themselves according to the situations they are in.

This is a novel by Chung Serang published in 2014. It won the 7th Changbi Novel Award. Through the protagonist in her 30s who experienced the death of her first love, this novel describes anxiety, frustration, melancholy, and loss in a light tone. The author intended to have the main character and her friends who attended the same school to heal their wounds together to show that pain can be healed by empathy.

2014년에 출간된 정세랑의 장편소설이다. 제7회 창비장편소설상을 수상했다. 작품은 첫사랑의 죽음이라는 사건을 경험한 30대의 주인공을 통해 그들의  불안과 좌절, 우울, 상실감을 무겁지 않은 어조로 들려주고 있다. 작가는 주인공과 학창시절을 같이 보낸 인물들과 함께 상처에서 벗어날 수 있도록 설정했는데, 이는 누군가의 고통은 공감에 의해 치유가능하다는 것을 보여주는 것이라고 할 수 있다.
