1999년에 출간된 조정래의 소설집이다. 1979년부터 1981년에 발표한 단편들을 모은 것이다. 표제작을 비롯하여 <장남 외줄타기>, <껍질의 삶>, <길이 다른 강>, <사랑의 벼랑>등 모두 8편이 수록되어 있다. 1979년부터 1981년 사이에 발표한 작품들을 알 수 있는 것은 당시 한국사회에 대한 작가의 다양한 판단과 해석이다. 작가는 급속한 근대화와 그에 따른 폐해, 각박해진 사회, 개인의 이야기가 사라지는 등의 상황에 문제를 제기하고 있다.

Published in 1999, this short story collection by Jo Jung-rae introduces eight of his stories released from 1979 to 1981, including “The Oldest on the Tightrope,” “The Husk of Life,” “The River on the Different Path,” and “The Love’s Cliff.” The writer deals with the problems of Korean society caused by rapid modernization and industrialization, and with the disappearance of community and the oppression of individuals.
