Plot

Big Yu-jin and Little Yu-jin are molested by the principal of their kindergarten. Big Yu-jin recovers her cheerfulness through the care and consideration of her parents and grows up to be an ordinary middle school student, but the Little Yu-jin becomes a middle school student with dark insides due to her parents’ indifference and unkind treatment. After they become middle school students, Little Yu-jin doesn’t like Big Yu-jin talking to her, and she distances herself from her studies because of her nagging parents. Then Little Yu-jin runs away from home with Big Yu-jin and Sora, and she thinks about her own existence.

This is a novel by Lee Geumyi, published in 2004. From an intimate perspective, the author depicts the protagonists’ growth with memories of violence and wounds. In particular, despite the heavy topic of sexual assault, the book shows an effort not to be overwhelmed by the gloomy reality by directly giving voice to the middle school student narrators.

2004년에 출간된 이금이의 장편소설이다. 작가는 폭력과 상처의 기억을 지닌 주인공이 성장하는 과정을 내밀한 시선으로 그려내고 있다. 특히 성폭행이라는 무거운 주제임에도 불구하고 중학생인 화자들의 목소리를 직접 들려주는 방법을 통해 암울한 현실에 압도당하지 않으려는 노력을 보여준다.
