Plot

When Nam Baek-pa, who has worked alongside Choe Seok in China for Korea’s independence, Choe Seok raises Nam’s daughter, Jeong-im. But as Jeong-im grows up, she and Choe Seok develop feelings for each other. When his wife and friends find this out and criticize him, Choe Seok feels guilty. He resigns from his post as a school principal and leaves for Siberia.

This is a novel by Yi Kwang-Su, serialized in The Chosun Ilbo from October 1 to December 13, 1933. A first-person confessional with letters and journal entries, it addresses the issue of love between men and women while providing a glimpse into the author’s pursuit of ideal love.
