표제작인 <유예>는 전쟁 포로인 회유를 거부하고 총살되기까지의 짧은 시간 동안 주인공의 의식을 세밀하게 포착하여 묘사한 작품이다. 한국의 전후문학을 대표하는 작가 중 한 명인 오상원은 인간의 실존주의와 행동주의를 형상화한 작품들을 주로 썼다. 전쟁이 강요하는 상황 아래에 인간의 고뇌와 좌절을 주로 다뤄 높은 평가를 받는다.

This is a collection of nine short stories: Chang Yong-hak’s “Poems of John the Baptist,” Jeon Kwang-yong’s “Driver’s Assistant” and “Kapitan Ri,” Kim Song-han’s “Badly,” Nam Jung-hyun’s “Chaos,” Son Chang-seop’s “Walking in the Snow,” Yi Ho-cheol’s “The Sultriness of a Cold Evening and “Torn Flesh,” and O Sang-won’s the title story “A Respite.”
