Plot

Wandeuk is not interested in studying. Every day, he hangs out and fights with his friends in the village. A school teacher nicknamed “Ddongju” shows interest and affection to Wandeuk. Wandeuk, who used to vent his anger at the world by fighting, takes up kickboxing at Ddongju’s suggestion and also learns the way to control his emotions. And he opens his heart to his mother, whom he’d only avoided out of awkwardness. For Wandeuk, the world is gradually becoming warmer.

This novel by Kim Ryeoryeong, published in 2008, is the winner of the 1st Changbi Youth Literature Award. It shows how the protagonist, who grew up in a poor family and is better at picking fights than studying, undergoes the process of learning to understand and love people with the help of his school teacher. Through rhythmic, concise sentences and fast story development, this novel breaks through the dark and grave reality.

2008년에 출간된 김려령의 장편소설이다. 제1회 창비 청소년문학상수상작이다. 작품은 가난한 집의 아들로 공부보다 싸움을 더 잘하는 주인공이 학교 선생님을 통해 사람을 이해하고 사랑하는 방법을 배워가는 과정을 보여준다. 리듬감있고 간결한 문장, 빠른 이야기 전개로 어둡고 무거운 현실을 돌파해내고 있다.
