Plot

Shin Kilman is conscripted into the Japanese army at the outbreak of World War II and fights in the war. Later, he becomes a prisoner of war in Germany and then a US prisoner of war on the coast of Normandy. He is taken to the Soviet Union as a prisoner of war and shot to death. From participating in an unwanted war and being captured by German and American soldiers to being executed in the Soviet Union, Shin Kilman was caught up in the history that unfolded against his will.

This is a novel by Jo Jung-Rae, published in 2007. It was serialized in the quarterly magazine Munhakdongne from the winter of 2006 to the spring of 2007. Set against the backdrop of World War II, this novel records the lives of individuals who have been excluded and marginalized from the recorded history, providing a place for them. The characters are unaware that their faithful lives were one of the major turning points in history, but the author says that they were also people who comprised the world.

2007년에 출간된 조정래의 장편소설이다. 2006년 겨울부터 2007년 봄까지 계간지 <문학동네>에 분재했던 작품이다. 작품은 제2차 세계대전을 배경으로 역사의 기록에서 배제되고 소외되었던 개인들의 삶을 기록하여 그들의 자리를 마련해주고 있다. 작중인물들은 그들이 충실했던 각자의 삶이 역사의 중요한 전환점들 중에 하나였음을 알지 못했지만 분명 그들은 세계를 구성했던 사람들이었음을 작가는 말하고 있다.
