1950년에 출간된 한무숙의 장편소설이다. <국제신보> 장편소설 공모에 당선된 작품이다. 작가는 주인공 조씨 가문의 물락과 하층계급이 새로운 역사의 주체로 떠오르는 시대적인 상황을 사실적으로 그려내었다.

This novel by Han Moo-sook was selected as the winner of the novel contest sponsored by newspaper Gukje Sinbo and was published in 1950. This compelling saga of love, jealousy, honor, and greed portrays the fall of the landowners and the rise of the working class as the new makers of history.
