Plot

Set in the Joseon Dynasty, spanning the reigns of King Jungjong to King Myeongjong, this novel meticulously describes the veiled enmity among the king’s consorts and their struggle to seize power. It tells the story of King Myeongjong, who ascended to the throne at the age of 12, and Queen Munjeong, who gained power as a regent to the king.

This is a historical novel by Park Chonghwa, serialized in The Hankook Ilbo from November 11, 1958, to November 17, 1959. It was written with the intention of exposing social problems in South Korea in the 1950s. On the one hand, it captures the image of the times when women's social activities came to thrive relatively and attracted the reader’s interests. Set in the Joseon Dynasty, the novel was a popular success as it grabbed the public’s interest by placing female characters at the center of power.

1958년 11월 11일부터 1959년 11월 17일까지 <한국일보>에 연재된 박종화의 역사장편소설이다. 이 작품은 1950년대 한국의 사회적 문제를 고발하려는 의도로 쓰여졌다. 한편으로는 여성의 사회적 진출이 비교적 활발해진 당시 시대상과 대중의 관심을 적절히 포착한 작품이기도 하다. 소설은 조선 시대를 배경으로 하여 여성 인물들을 권력의 중심으로 위치시킴으로써 대중의 흥미를 자극하여 대중적인 성공을 거뒀다.
