Plot

After being discharged from the military, Oh Yeong-dae is excited at the thought of becoming financially independent and finding a place on his own. In a small, basement apartment he finally rents, he finds a notebook from the previous resident. It contains a story titled "The Eighth Room" written by a young female student, possibly Yeong-dae’s age. A few days prior, Yeong-dae had no answer to the question his crush had asked him: “What is your dream?” As he had been thinking a lot about himself since then, he begins to peruse the notebook, which is a record kept by a student who had been in a similar situation to himself.

This is a novel by Kim Miwol, published in 2010. It was serialized in the quarterly magazine Segyeui munhak (World Literature) in 2008. With a young man as the protagonist, it depicts the gap between the reality and the future the youth dream of with lighthearted sentences. In particular, by linking the dreams of young people with the rooms they live in, this novel humorously reveals the problems of reality.

2010년에 출간된 김미월의 장편소설이다. 2008년 계간지<세계의 문학>에 연재되었던 작품이다. 작품은 청년을 주인공으로 내세워 그들이 꿈꾸는 미래와 현실의 간극을 무겁지 않은 문장으로 그려내고 있다. 특히 청춘들의 꿈과 그들이 살고 있는 방을 연결하여 유머러스하게 현실의 문제를 드러내었다.
