Plot

Kwon's family moves into the room that the narrator rents out. Kwon, who has two children and a pregnant wife to take care of, was accused of being an instigator of the “Gwangju Complex Incident” and served a sentence in prison. One day, Kwon's wife undergoes an operation. Not having enough money for her operation, Kwon asks the narrator to lend him money, but the narrator refuses. However, after that, the narrator pays for the surgery without Kwon's knowledge. Kwon, unaware of this, disguises himself as a robber and breaks into the narrator’s house but accidentally reveals his identity to the narrator. The narrator tells Kwon the truth, but Kwon’s pride takes a hit, and he leaves.

This is a short story by Yun Heunggil, published in the summer issue of Changjakgwa bipyeong (Creation and Criticism) in 1977. It deals with the life and disappearance of a college-educated individual who is constantly marginalized. It is considered to be a sharp criticism of the issues of Korean society in the 1970s.

1977년 <창작과 비평> 여름호에 발표된 윤흥길의 단편소설이다. 대학을 나와 끊임없이 주변부로 소외되는 한 개인의 삶과 행방불명을 다룬 작품이다. 1970년대 한국사회의 문제점을 드러내고 날카로운 비판을 한 작품이라 평가된다.
