“Father under Surveillance” is a short story published in 1990 by Choe Yun, and it was also included in the 1992 collection of her stories titled There a Petal Silently Falls . “Father under Surveillance” is set in 1990 when the world saw the collapse of communist countries, and it deals with a family tragedy caused by the ideological conflict of the only divided country in the world. The story is an elegant and emotional depiction of a son who slowly comes to understand his father from North Korea after their sudden and unexpected reunion.
