Plot

Writer Park researches various documents and records to write a novel about “The Legend of Arang.” Among them, he finds Jeong-ok nangja-jeon (Story of Jeong-ok) the most striking, and he uses it as a reference point for his novel. Meanwhile, Yeong-ju, a hairdresser, moves into Park's house one day and takes care of him. To Park, Arang and Yeongju are two different people yet also the same person. As he reconstructs Arang's story, Park increasingly thinks that Arang might be a butterfly. At the same time, he think that Arang's story can and should always be made into a story by anyone, not just himself.

This is a novel by Kim Young-ha, published in 2001. It is based on “The Legend of Arang,” and it tells a story that takes place around the fictional Jeong-ok nangja-jeon. This intriguing work combines the author's imagination and the results of detailed historical research. Originally, it was serialized online, but was later revised and published in the book form.
