Plot

The narrator hears the news about the death of Uncle Suni in my hometown of Jeju Island. Uncle Suni had helped with chores at the narrator’s house for the past year, and then returned to Jeju Island to commit suicide. Uncle Suni suffered from a nervous breakdown after losing two children to the massacre of villagers by soldiers 30 years ago. The narrator thinks that his uncle's death had been deferred for 30 years.

1978년 <창작과 비평>에 발표된 현기영의 단편소설이다. 제주 4·3 사건을 문학적으로 논의한 최초의 작품으로, 이후 4·3사건에 대한 연구가 활발히 전개되고, 문학을 비롯해 미술·연극계 등 문화계 전반에 걸쳐 큰 영향을 끼쳤다.

This is a short story by Hyun Ki Young, published in CHangjakgwaa bipyeong (Creation and Criticism) in 1978. It is the first work to discuss the Jeju April 3rd incident in a literary way, and since then, research on the April 3rd incident has been actively carried out, and this short story has had a great influence on the entire cultural sector, including literature, art and theater.
