2013년 겨울<작가세계> 신인상을 수상한 최은영의 작품을 2016년에 소설집으로 묶어 출간하였다. <쇼코의 미소>를 비롯해 <한지와 영주>, <먼 곳에서 온 노래>, <비밀> 등 모두 7편의 작품이 수록되어 있다. <쇼코의 미소>는 다른 국적과 언어를 가진 인물들이 힘겹게 성장해 가는 과정을 그린 작품이며, 그 외 다른 작품들 역시 자신들도 모르는 순간 멸시와 혐오의 대상이 되어버린 사람들의 고통과 특정할 수 없는 많은 이유로 내면의 상처를 가진 사람들의 이야기를 작가 특유의 섬세하고 정밀한 시선으로 그려내었다.

In 2013, Choi Eunyoung received the New Writer’s Award from the literary magazine The World of Writers for her short story “Shoko’s Smile.”  In 2016, it was published as the title story of the collection Shoko’s Smile, along with six of her other short stories including “Hanji and Yeongju,” “A Song from Afra,” and “Secret.” In “Shoko’s Smile,” the writer tells the story of characters who are from different countries and speak different languages as they find themselves the object of other people’s hatred and contempt. In language that is clear and unembellished, the stories are intimate portraits of the lives of young women who must struggle with different painful experiences in their lives.
