Plot

The narrator hears the news about the death of Seong il, a childhood friend. Seong il and I used to play by ringing the church bell, but one day Seong il fell while ringing the bell and became a hunchback. Seong il has been living alone for all of his life and has been painting to manage his misfortune and anger. Returning to my hometown for the first time in over 40 years, the narrator takes one of Seong il’s paintings and goes to his grave.

This is a short story by Hwang Sun Won, published in his short story collection titled Tal (Mask) in 1976. This story presents the possibility of healing through art. The protagonist paints pictures as a way to manage his misfortune and anger and realizes that he has been saved through fulfillment.
