Plot

The narrator is asked by a magazine to summarize the life of Bak Bugil, an established writer. The narrator reconstructs Bak’s life through Bak’s interviews and his autobiographical fiction Fruits of the Earth. As a child, Bak Bugil had given nail clippers to a crazy man who was trapped in his uncle's backyard, and the man had committed suicide with the nail clippers. After learning that the madman is his father, Bak suffers from guilt. Afterward, he falls in love with an older woman named Jongdan, but after hearing that she wants to marry a pastor, he attends a seminary. However, their love does not come true. as she leaves to study abroad. Bak Bugil decides to drop out of school and become a writer.

This is a novel by Lee Seung-U, published in 1992. In this work, the narrator traces the life of novelist Bak Bugil, and delicately depicts the dark side of the individual’s life. It describes the process of a character’s healing in an analytical and critical style.
