Was war es, das den jungen Min Yo-sŏp acht Jahre, bevor seine Leiche auf einem Bergpfad in der Nähe eines Bethauses gefunden wurde, vom dem für ihn vorgezeichneten Weg eines brillanten Theologen abbrachte? Was hatte ihn veranlasst, sich von seiner Kirche abzuwenden, all sein Hab und Gut an die Armen zu verteilen und von der Bildfläche zu verschwinden? Sierżant Nam to typ służbisty, któremu obce są zawiłe intrygi oraz rozbudowane śledztwa. Dopiero sprawa morderstwa Mina Yosopa, członka centrum modlitwy „Życie wieczne”, wyrywa go z marazmu i stawia przed wielkim wyzwaniem. Twórczość Yi Munyola cechuje się wielką różnorodnością – od kryminału, przez powieść historyczną, po tematykę gnostyczną i polityczną. W porównywanym do Władcy much W. Goldinga Uridul ui ilgurojin yongung (Nasz spaczony bohater, 1987) autor na zasadzie paraleli przedstawia masakrę w Kwangju w postaci starć między uczniami a dyżurnym klasy. Cholmun nal ui ch’osang (Portret mojej młodości, 1981) to z kolei powieść o herkulesowej próbie, której podejmuje się młody mężczyzna, chcąc zwalczyć własną postawę nihilistyczną oraz chęć popełnienia samobójstwa. W Yongung sidae (Wiek bohaterów, 1984) Yi Munyol zmierzył się z traumą powstałą po ucieczce ojca, próbując zrekonstruować jego późniejsze życie w Korei Północnej. Yi Munyol znany jest w Korei Południowej z konserwatywnych poglądów, którym daje często wyraz w swoich książkach.
