The author of seven previous novels, Gong Ji-young won the very prestigious 21st Century Literary Award in 2000. She is now one of the most acclaimed contemporary woman writers of Korea. Through her novels which were published in 1990, 1991, 1993, two in 1994, 1997 and My Sister Bongsoon which was published in 1998, Gong has become one of the most influential writers appealing to the new generation of Korean women and men. She explores the pain, conflicts and complexities of women searching a place in the new Korea. 'My Sister Bongsoon' is an autobiographical novel. Through the eyes of Jiang, a precocious five-year old girl, the author relates how Bongsoon, a live-in maid who was uneducated, unloved but innocent and hard-working like most of the maids of those days, views the emerging new world of Korean reality. There is anguish, insight, but also immense pain in this novel.

C’est une histoire vraie que nous livre ici l’auteur, une histoire pleine d’émotion et d’humanité où, grâce à des souvenirs étonnamment précis, elle fait revivre son enfance et surtout sa grande soeur Bongsun qui l’a initiée au monde et à la vie. Bongsun a connu la maltraitance, l’abandon et la faim dès son plus jeune âge. À sept ans elle s’est enfuie d’une famille où elle avait été placée, qui la battait et l’affamait, pour se réfugier auprès de la mère de Jjang (surnom d’enfance de l’auteur). La petite Jjang, très attachée à elle, la considère comme sa grande soeur et partage des moments forts et tendres avec elle. Bongsoon, timida ragazza di campagna non istruita, viene accolta da una famiglia borghese e preposta alle mansioni più umili e servili. Siamo nella Corea degli anni Sessanta, nel periodo del boom economico; la dolorosa guerra civile che ha lacerato il Paese è finita da poco lasciando il passo a una nuova prosperità che rende ancor più profondo il divario tra ricchi e poveri. Il romanzo segue la parabola di Bongsoon attraverso la voce di Jjang, figlia della famiglia per cui lavora: bambina precoce di cinque anni, ella si affeziona molto alla giovane fantesca crescendo accanto a lei quasi in simbiosi. Mentre la piccola Jjang, mossa da una forte voglia di conoscere, furtivamente si appropria di tutte le notizie che riesce a carpire a Bongsoon e alla sua amica Mija, la giovane donna intraprende solitaria il suo cammino: estremamente incuriosita dalla vita, ricercherà l'amore che le manca, trovandosi però coinvolta in una relazione sfortunata che culminerà con una fuga da casa, percosse brutali, un aborto e un ritorno carico di delusione. Alla fine Bongsoon si allontana dall'occhio di Jjang che la vede andare alla deriva: una donna sola, già privata di ogni affetto e costretta a un duro lavoro che, perduta anche la propria innocenza, scenderà uno ad uno i gradini dell'abiezione.
