Plot

The year Dalnae turns three years old, a forest fire breaks out in the village, burning down her parents’ house. Dalnae's mother burns her hand trying to save her, and ends up getting leprosy. After that, her mother leaves home and lives in a cave in the mountains. Meanwhile, Dalnae grows up and promises to marry Bau, a young man in the village, but is hesitant because of the fact that her mother is leper. At that time, the village magistrate demands to have Dalnae, and Dalnae prepares to run away with Bau. That night, Bau learns that Dalnae's mother has leprosy. A few years later, Dalnae’s family, including Bau, become lepers and live deep in the mountains.

This is a play by Choi In-hun, published in 1977. Choi said that in this play, he portrayed a terrible situation with harsh conditions, and wrote about how a love greater than the difficulties is realized, rather than about how people become frustrated by those conditions. Dalnae’s acceptance of her mother who suffers from leprosy symbolizes a return to paradise and reconciliation with nature.
