Plot

Park Hui-wan and old man Ahn often visit the real estate office owned by Officer Seo. Old man Ahn’s daughter is a dancer, famous for being frugal, but Ahn persuades her to invest a lot of money in real estate when he hears that he could become rich from purchasing land by the western coast, as a port will be built in the area. A year later, Ahn finds out that he had been swindled and commits suicide.

This is a short story by Yi Tae Jun, published in Jogwang in 1937. This mainly features characters who are unable to adapt to the rapidly changing reality. In particular, it exposes dilettantism, which manifests as cynicism toward society and an ironic attitude toward life.

1937년 <조광(朝光)>에 발표된 이태준의 단편이다. 이 작품은 급격하게 변화하는 현실에 적응하지 못 하는 인물들을 주로 다뤘다. 특히 사회에 대한 냉소와 인생에 대한 아이러니적 태도를 드러내는 딜레탕티즘이  잘 드러난 작품이라 평가받는다.
