Plot

In the year of Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, Lee In-tae came to Wolpo-ok, an inn in the market place, and lived as a pimp to Wolpo-daek. Now suffering from kidney disease, Lee In-tae is awaiting death. He is obsessed with finding a good grave for himself. The reason for his obsession to find an auspicious grave spot is related to his past when he turned traitor against the independence army.

This is a novel by Kim Won-il, published in 1985. It depicts the way a person, who had served as an independent soldier during the Japanese colonial period, but turned traitor, is living after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule. It is considered to be a novel that most profoundly deals with the issues of betrayal and reflection.

1985년에 출간된 김원일의 장편소설이다. 일제강점기, 독립군으로 활동했으나 변절한 인물이 해방 후 현재 어떻게 살아가고 있는가를 다룬다. 변절과 반성의 문제를 가장 깊이 다룬 소설이라는 평가를 받는다.
