Plot

Mohwa is a shaman, who lives with her daughter Nangi in a small town called Japseong-chon, Gyeongju. Her son Ugi, who left home at a young age, returns home as a Christian. The conflict deepens between Ugi, who believes in Jesus, and Mohwa, who believes in ghosts, and in the end, Mohwa stabs Ugi with a sword. Mohwa dies while performing a shamanic rite, and Nangi leaves with her father.

This is a short story by Kim Dongri, published in Jungang in May 1936. It focuses on the exploration of a mysterious and fateful life through the life of a shaman. In 1978, the author expanded this short story into a novel titled Eul-hwa.

1936년 5월 <중앙>에 발표된 김동리의 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 무당의 삶을 통해 신비스럽고 운명적인 삶에 대한 탐구를 드러내고 있다. 1978년 『을화』라는 제목의 장편소설로 확장되었다.
