Plot

While studying in Tokyo, Japan, Yi Inhwa receives a telegram that his wife has fallen critically ill. But instead of leaving for Joseon immediately, he goes drinking and meets up with his girlfriend Ulla. On the ferry to Busan, he sees people being interrogated and humiliated by Japanese policemen simply for being Korean. A little after Yi Inhwa arrives in Seoul, his wife dies and he hosts her funeral. Afterward, he leaves for Tokyo in spite of his family’s attempts to dissuade him.

This is a short story by Yom Sang-seop, serialized in Sinsaenghwal from July to September 1922 and in Sidae ilbo from April to June 1924 under the title under the title “Myoji (The graveyard).” Set in Korea immediately prior to the March 1st Independence Movement, it realistically depicts the miserable reality of Joseon.

‘묘지(墓地)라는 제목으로 1922년 7월부터 9월까지 <신생활>에 연재되다가, 1924년 4월부터 6월까지 <시대일보>에 연재된 염상섭의 중편소설이다. 3.1운동 직전을 배경으로, 조선의 비참한 현실을 현실적으로 묘사하고 있다.
