Plot

The main character despairs when the March Movement in 1919 ends in failure. Undeterred, he decides to visit different countries around the world to share and spread the spirit of the March Movement with people and to find a way to liberate his country. He meets people from different countries and discusses the problems of ethnic and national conflicts. He also pursues his studies and shares Asian philosophy and thoughts with people around the world.

1937년 영어로 초판 출간된 강용흘의 장편소설이다. 2000년 <동양선비 서양에 가시다>라는 제목으로 한국어로 출간되었다. 작품은 1919년의 3.1운동의 실패와 좌절을 딛고, 3.1운동의 중심 사상을 해외에 알리려는 주인공의 실천을 다루고 있다. 특히 주인공이 세계 각지에서 만난 동서양의 많은 사람들에게 조선민족의 사상과 조선의 아름다움 등을 알리는데 주력하는 모습과 토론을 통해 학문의 폭을 넓혀가는 모습은 인상적이다.

This novel by Gang Yongheul was published first in English in 1937, and its Korean version was later published in 2000. The novel tells the story of a main character who overcomes despair over the failed March Movement, and travels the world to share with people of different countries the March Movement’s spirit of non-violence. The main character teaches people Korean culture and history and the beauty of his country as he also learns from them different ideas and the history of their countries.
