Plot

Jeomsun hands the baked potato to the narrator, which the narrator turns down. Embarrassed, Jeomsun brings a rooster from home and makes it fight the narrator’s rooster. Angry, the narrator beats her rooster with a stick, killing it. Then he fears that he will be scolded by the farm’s supervisor for killing the rooster. At this time, Jeomsun convinces him that everything will be okay if he just listens to her. So the narrator follows Jeomsun’s lead.

This is a short story by Kim Yu-jeong, published in Jogwang in May 1936. It paints a humorous picture of the love between an innocent boy and girl from the countryside, based on the relationship between tenant farmers and their supervisor.

1936년 5월 <조광>에 발표된 김유정의 단편소설이다. 순박한 시골 남녀의 사랑을 마름과 소작인의 관계를 토대로 유머러스하게 그려내고 있다.
