Plot

This is a historical novel set in 15th-century Joseon Dynasty. King Munjong dies, and young King Danjong ascends to the throne. Suyang, who becomes King Sejo, exiles Danjong to Yeongwol. Eventually Danjong ends his tragic life by hanging himself by a bowstring.

This is a historical novel, serialized in The Dong-A Ilbo from November 30, 1928, to December 1, 1929. Written by Yi Kwang-Su who aimed to awaken the spirit of the nation, it tells the story about the life of King Danjong, who was sacrificed in a fight between the King Sejong and Munjong’s conservative faction and King Sejo’s reformist faction.

1928년 11월 30일부터 1929년 12월 1일까지 <동아일보>에 연재된 이광수의 장편 역사 소설이다. 작가가 민족 정신을 일깨우기 위해 집필한 역사소설로, 당시 세종과 문종의 수구파와 세조의 개혁파 사이의 다툼에 희생된 단종의 비극적인 생애를 다뤘다.
