Giljung is a self-made yet violent man. He frequently beats his wife, surnamed Yun. His repeated violence results in his children fearing him and his wife coming down with dementia. But his wife and daughter make continued efforts to protect their family.

This is a novel by Lee Hye-kyung, published in 1995. It tells the story of a family that is destroyed by the violence of a patriarchal father. From various perspectives, it portrays the evils of Korea’s deep-rooted patriarchal system and the people suffering under it.

1995년에 발표한 이혜경의 장편소설이다. 가부장적인 아버지의 폭력에 의해 무너지는 가족을 다뤘다. 한국 사회의 악습인 가부장제도와 그 아래 고통받는 사람들의 모습을 다양한 관점에서 묘사하고 있다는 평을 받는다.
