Plot

A company president asks the main character to write a biography of the president’s father. While the main character researches the president’s father, who is known as an independence fighter during the Japanese occupation, the main character discovers unexpected evidence that the president’s father worked for Japan during the last years of the occupation, and that the friend of the president’s father who funded the independence movement has been accused of treason. After this discover, the main character tells the company president he will not write the biography.

This novel by Hong Sung-won was published in 1996, and the story deals with people’s pasts—those who betrayed their country and worked for Japan during the Japanese occupation, and those who fought to free their country. With characters including independence activists who turn out to be turncoats, and some independence activists falsely accused as traitors, the writer shows the importance of history and how difficult it is to discover truth in a history which has been distorted and manipulated by those who must hide the truth.

1996년에 출간된 홍성원의 장편소설이다. 작가는 일제하의 항일운동과 친일행적이 현재의 인물들에게 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 소설의 형식을 빌려 질문하고 있다. 항일운동가에서 친일로 전향한 자들, 독립운동가이지만 친일행위를 했다고 잘못 기록된 자들 등을 통해 제대로 된 역사기록과 역사의 의미 그리고 잘못된 역사 속에서 진실을 찾는 것이 얼마나 어려운 일인지 보여주고 있다.
