Plot

This novel begins with the recollection of a prisoner of war Lee Myung-jun who rejected both Koreas and chose to head to a neutral country. Three years after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, Myeong-jun smuggles himself into North Korea but despairs of life there, and returns to South Korea. However, the Battle of the Nakdong River soon breaks out, and Myeong-jun is taken prisoner there. In the evaluation for the repatriation of prisoners, he chooses to go to a neutral country, rather than either Koreas.

Descriptions(Languages 2)

In the field of literature after the division of the Korean Peninsula, which constitutes a large proportion of the history of Korean literature in the late 20th century, this novel is considered a work that heralded the new beginning of modern Korean fiction with  a style and ideas that are significantly different from the post-war literature of the 1950s

20세기 후반 한국문학사에서 큰 비중을 차지하는 분단문학 분야에서 1950년대의 전후문학과는 확연히 다른 형식과 발상으로 현대소설의 새로운 시작을 알린 작품으로 평가된다.
