Kang Sungeun (born 1973) is a South Korean poet.
Life
Kang Sungeun was born in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province, in 1973. Kang studied creative writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts. At school, she considered that poetry was not for her and focused on fiction. She began writing poems only after graduation, during which time she taught poetry writing and entrance exam preparation at an arts high school. Kang made her literary debut in 2005, when six of her poems including "12wol" (12월 December) won the Munhakdongne New Writer's Award.
From 2004, Kang has been part of the literary club “Instant” with writers such as Kim An and Shin Dong-ok. From 2015 to 2017 she co-hosted the podcast "Have a Cuppa Book" with the poets Kim Hyun and Park Siha, with whom she also co-founded the independent magazine The merly, which accepted both fiction and nonfiction contributions regardless of the author's debut status. Kang contributed the story "Inok ssi aseyo?" (이녹 씨 아세요? Do You Know Yi Nok?), her first published work of fiction. Kang's poetry collections include Gudureul singo jami deureotda (구두를 신고 잠이 들었다 I Fell Asleep with My Shoes On) and Lo-fi, among others. She is the recipient of the 2018 Daesan Literary Award.
Writing
Kang Sungeun's surrealistic imagination lends itself to fantastic settings in space and time. Her poetry borrows from fairy tales and children's songs as well as the world of dreams, embracing the images of night and sleep. She has written many poems titled "Hwansangui bit" (환상의 빛 Fantastic Light) and "ghost," which may appear many times in the same book, and pop up repeatedly over multiple collections.
Her first collection, Gudureul singo jami deureotda, was considered a virtuoso attempt at depicting a fantasy world of nightmarish fairytales through well-tempered rhythm and tightly knitted language. In one poem, "Seherajade" (세헤라자 Scheherazade), the poet assumes the mantle of Scheherazade, drawing upon a fairytale sensibility and symbolism in strange and dark tales that become beautiful in the telling.
Kang's third collection, Lo-fi, turns the poet's surrealistic imagination on its head, imploding the world of reality to make way for her own, indecipherable place and time. Taking its title from "low fidelity," the type of sound recording that contains technical flaws, the collection instantly immerses readers into a mysterious, low-pitched, low-sunken place. This time and space encompasses the unknown of before birth and after death, where it is difficult to separate dreams from reality. In this place, the safe, secure world we know is dismantled completely.
Kang Sungeun's complex, challenging poetry has found both critical and popular support. Nightmares and fantasy take the stand in for the violence and injustice of reality, creating an improbable beauty of its own.

강성은(1973~ )은 대한민국의 시인이다.
생애
강성은은 1973년 경북 의성에서 태어났다. 어렸을 때 자주 아팠으며 초등학교 때까지 몽유병이 있어서 어머니의 과보호 속에서 자랐다.1) 서울예술대학교 문예창작학과를 졸업했다. 시는 아무나 쓸 수 있는 게 아니라고 생각해 재학 중에는 소설을 더 열심히 썼고, 졸업하고 한참이 지난 뒤에야 시를 쓰기 시작했다. 예술고등학교 문예창작과에서 시창작 수업과 입시 지도를 하였다. 2005년 《문학동네》 신인상에 〈12월〉 외 5편의 시가 당선되어 데뷔했다.
2004년부터 김안, 신동옥 등이 소속된 ‘인스턴트’ 동인으로 활동했다. 2015년부터 2017년까지는 강독회 ‘책이나 한잔 마셔요’와 팟캐스트 ‘시원해요’를 김현 시인, 박시하 시인과 함께 진행했다. 같은 구성원으로 독립잡지 《더 멀리》를 만들었다. 이 잡지에서는 문학과 비문학, 등단과 비등단을 구분하지 않고 투고를 받았다. 강성은 자신도 2015년 이 잡지에 소설 〈이녹 씨 아세요?〉를 발표하면서 소설도 쓰기 시작했다. 시집으로 《구두를 신고 잠이 들었다》(2009), 《Lo-fi》(2018) 등이 있다. 2018년 제26회 대산문학상을 수상했다.
작품 세계
강성은은 초현실적인 상상력을 바탕으로 환상적인 시공간을 그린다. 그녀의 시는 동화나 동요를 차용하기도 하고, 꿈의 세계를 적극적으로 그리기도 하며, 밤과 잠의 이미지도 자주 활용한다. 강성은은 ‘환상의 빛’과 ‘ghost’라는 제목의 시를 여러 편 썼는데, 이 시들은 한 시집에 여러 번 등장하기도 하고, 여러 시집에 반복해서 등장하기도 한다.
첫 시집 《구두를 신고 잠이 들었다》는 악몽 같은 동화와 환상의 세계를 세련되고 유려한 리듬, 잘 짜인 어법으로 노래한 시집이라는 평가를 받았다. 이 시집에 실린 시 〈세헤라자데〉에서 시인은 끝없는 이야기를 들여주는 세헤라자데를 자청하며 동화적 상상력과 상징들을 시 속으로 가져와 낯설고 어두운 이야기들을 아름답게 들려준다.
강성은의 세 번째 시집 《Lo-fi》에서는 기존에 자신이 보여주었던 초현실적 상상력을 뒤틀어 현실 세계를 내파하고 자신만의 불가해한 시공간을 탄생시킨다. ‘저음질’을 뜻하는 음향 용어 ‘Lo-fi’를 제목으로 삼은 이 시집은 독자들을 한순간에 정체불명의 나직하고 깊은 시공간으로 인도한다. 그곳은 태어나기 전이나 죽은 후의 알 수 없는 시공간이기도 하고, 현실과 꿈을 구분하기 어려운 어떤 곳이기도 하다. 여기에서 모든 안락하고 견고한 현실 세계는 무너져 내린다.
강성은의 시는 난해하고 불친절하지만 독자와 평단의 지지를 고르게 받고 있다. 시는 현실의 폭력과 부조리를 악몽과 환상으로 치환하여 묘사하지만, 부조리 자체가 아름다움이 되는 ‘서정적 부조리’의 세계를 보여준다는 평가를 받기도 한다.
