Introduction
Hong Sung-ran (born in 1958) is a Korean sijo (Korean traditional poetic form) poet. She mainly wrote dan sijo that contains the aesthetics of moderation and tension. She showed a unique world of poetry in which she compares human affairs to nature with modern sensibilities. [1]
Life
Hong was born in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province in 1958. She received a Ph. D. in Korean classics from Sungkyunkwan University. She debuted by winning the first place in the 1989 Joongang Sijo Contest.
She has a perspective on poetry: first and foremost, she must tell honest stories about herself in poetry so that the readers can also feel peaceful joy. When composing sijo, musicality and rhythm is particularly important to her. [2]
Her sijo collections include Hwangjini byeolgok (황진이 별곡 Hwang Gini Verses) (1998), Gyeoul yaksok (겨울 약속 Winter Promise) (2000), Baram bureo geuriun nal (바람 불어 그리운 날 Being Nostalgic On a Windy Day) (2005), Aein isseoyo (애인 있어요 I Have a Lover) (2013) and Baramui meorikarak (바람의 머리카락 The Hair In the Wind) (2016). She compiled poems for recitation and published Sesangui gajang anjjok (세상의 가장 안쪽 The Innermost Part of the World) (2017), Naega joahaneun hyeondaesijo 100seon (내가 좋아하는 현대시조 100선 My Favorite 100 Contemporary Sijos) (2006) and essays Baekpalbeonnoe-haneurui sori, ttangui sori (백팔번뇌-하늘의 소리, 땅의 소리 The 108 Anxieties – The Sound of the Sky, The Sound of the Earth) (2009) and Yeolmukkot (열무꽃 Radish Flowers) (2010).
Hong has made various efforts to expand the base of sijo. She participated in a seminar entitled “Sijo, Singing its old future” [3] and conducted a lecture on literature linking farmer’s minds with those of poets in the curriculum for next-generation rural leaders.[4] She served as the member of the standing editorial committee of a poetry magazine Yusim and the head of Yusim Sijo Academy.
She won the Rookie award of Joongang Sijo Prize (중앙시조대상) in 1995, the Yusim Works Award (유심작품상) in 2003, the Lee Yeong-do Sijo Literature Award (이영도시조문학상) in 2009 and the Chungnam Society of Poets’ Best Works Award (충남시인협회 작품상) in 2012.
Writing
Dan Sijo (Classical or Traditional Sijo)
Hong Sung-ran is one of many contemporary Korean sijo poets among whom she especially tries to consciously maintain the form of dan sijo. [5] Her sijo is evaluated as having built a unique world of poetry through new language and image in the formal framework of dan sijo. [6] Dan sijo anthology Sopung (소풍 Picnic) (2016) includes her work Dansijoui mihak (단시조의 미학 The Aesthetic of Dan Sijo) which theoretically explains the concept of dan sijo, the significance of each line, and the rhythm of dan sijo.
Yon Sijo·Sasol Sijo (The linked sijo·the widely expanded sijo)
She has not just created dan sijo. She has also tried to express the characteristics of each form of sijo as much as possible, writing the yon sijo and sasol sijo.
In her yon sijo, which has fewer formal restrictions than dan sijo, she has attempted to change cadence and revive rhythm through the nuance and repetition of the language.[7]
In her sasol sijo, she used exquisite humor, satire, wit and irony. Homsyoping (홈쇼핑 Home Shopping) jeers at and criticizes the capitalistic conditions with the repeated uses of the same ending and ironic developments. [8] Keungonireul noraeham (큰고니를 노래함 Singing Of a Whooper Swan) shows a warm gaze and introspective attitude embracing the subject based on the techniques of repetition and enumeration. [9]
Buddhist Images
Frequent uses of Buddhist images are the hallmark of Hong Sung-ran sijo. In Budo (부도 Buddha), she connected human life to the act of cutting śarīra [10] to represent the attitude to life in which she constantly trains and practices herself. In Dallyeogeul geolmyeo (달력을 걸며 Hanging Up a Calendar), she looked back on the present problems from the perspective of karma and evoked the teachings of the Sutra of the Lotus [11] that there is a way out of any desperate situation. In Musoyu (무소유 Non-possession), she linked non-possession [12], the Buddhist stage free of anguish and the three worlds [13] with true love. In Janmulgyeol (잔물결 The Ripples), she showed an attitude that one should be always faithful to the present [14], because every moment is the sole thing, taking notice of the concept Jehaengmusang [15] where everything in the world changes without stopping.

도입부
홍성란(1958~)은 한국의 시조시인이다. 절제와 긴장의 미학을 담은 단시조를 주로 썼다. 현대적인 감성으로 인간사를 자연에 빗대어 그려내는 개성적인 시세계를 보여주었다.1)
생애
1958년 충청남도 부여에서 태어났다. 성균관대학교에서 한국고전문학 박사 학위를 받았다. 1989년 중앙시조백일장에서 장원을 하며 등단했다.
시란 무엇보다도 먼저 자기 자신의 이야기를 진솔하게 풀어나가야 하며, 이를 통해 독자 또한 평화로운 기쁨을 느낄 수 있다고 시관을 갖고 있다. 시조 창작에서는 음악성과 리듬감을 특히 중요시하였다.2)
시조집으로 《황진이 별곡》(1998), 《겨울 약속》(2000), 《바람 불어 그리운 날》(2005), 《애인 있어요》(2013), 《바람의 머리카락》(2016) 등이 있다. 낭송시를 엮어 《세상의 가장 안쪽》(2017)을, 《내가 좋아하는 현대시조 100선》(2006)을 간행하였으며, 에세이집 《백팔번뇌-하늘의 소리, 땅의 소리》(2009), 《열무꽃》(2010)을 출간하였다.
시조의 저변 확대를 위해 다방면으로 노력하였다. 2018년 미국 캘리포니아에서 열린 초청 세미나 <시조, 그 오래된 미래를 노래하다>에 참가하였으며3), 차세대 농촌지도자 교육과정에서 농부의 마음과 시인의 마음을 연결짓는 문학 강의를 진행하였다.4) 시 전문지 《유심》 상임편집위원, 유심 시조아카데미 원장을 지냈다.

작품 세계
단시조
홍성란은 적지 않은 한국의 현대 시조시인들 중에서 특히 단시조 형식을 의식적으로 지키려고 노력하는 시인이다.5) 홍성란의 시조는 단시조라는 형식적 틀 안에서 새로운 언어와 이미지를 통해 개성적인 시세계를 구축했다는 평가를 받는다.6) 단시조 모음집 《소풍》(2016)에 단시조의 개념과 각 장의 의의, 단시조의 리듬 의식 등을 이론적으로 설명한 <단시조의 미학>을 싣기도 했다.
연시조·사설시조
홍성란이 단시조만 창작한 것은 아니다. 홍성란은 연시조, 사설시조 등도 쓰면서 각 시조 형식의 특징을 최대한 발현하려고 노력했다.
단시조보다 형식적 제약이 적은 연시조에서는 언어의 어감과 반복성을 통하여 율격에 변화를 주고 리듬을 살리는 시도를 보여주었다.7)
사설시조에서는 절묘한 해학과 풍자, 재치와 반어를 구사하였다. <홈쇼핑>에서는 동일한 어미의 반복적인 사용과 반어적 내용 전개를 바탕으로 자본주의 세태를 야유하고 비판했다.8) <큰고니를 노래함>에서는 반복과 열거의 기법을 바탕으로 대상을 포용하는 따뜻한 시선과 성찰적 자세를 보여주었다.9)
불교적 이미지
불교적 이미지의 빈번한 사용은 홍성란 시조의 한 특징이다. <부도(浮屠)>에서는 인간의 생을 사리10)를 깎는 행위와 연결하여 자신을 끊임없이 단련하고 수행하는 삶의 태도를 드러내었다. <달력을 걸며>에서는 현재의 문제를 과거 행위의 업보라는 관점에서 돌아보면서 어떤 절망적인 상황에도 빠져나갈 길이 있다는 법화경11)의 가르침을 환기했다. <무소유>에서는 번뇌를 벗어난 불교적 경지인 무소유12) 및 삼계13)와 진정한 사랑을 연결지었다. <잔물결>에서는 세상 모든 것이 멈추지 않고 변화한다는 제행무상14)에 주목하여 모든 순간이 유일하기에 언제나 현재에 충실해야 한다15)는 태도를 보여주었다.
