  • The Artistry of Early Korean Cartography
    English(English) Book Available

Han Young Woo et al / 한영우 et al / 2008 / KDC구분 > History

"The Artistry of Early Korean Cartography" is a window on the cultural, technological, and even spiritual factors that affected the way Koreans observed themselves, their landscape, and the rest of the world before the twentieth century. How did cartography stand astride the realms of art and science in pre-modern Korea? How do Koreans today understand the roots of their own culture, and what new perspective can their insights lend to our own views of the world? These questions and many others are taken up by three of Korea's leading scholars, Han Youngwoo, Ahn Hwi-Joon, and Bae Woo Sung. In this book, nearly one hundred color images of important cartographic works open up the 'Hermit Kingdom' to reveal its perceptions of itself and the world around it.     Source: http://www.amazon.com/Artistry-Early-Korean-Cartography/dp/0917436105

    English(English) Book Available

    Han Young Woo / 한영우 / 2017 / KDC구분 > History > Asia > Korea > Choson dynasty

Fully illustrated in colour, here is the first introduction in English to one of Korea's outstanding cultural assets - the banchado (painting of the order of guests in a royal event) commemorating the 1795 royal procession to Hwaseong (Gyeonggi Province). It is a fine example of the meticulous record-keeping (uigwe) and the skills of the court painters at that time. Comprising some 1800 people, the eight-day procession was organized by King Jeongjo in order to visit the tomb of his father and to celebrate his mother's sixtieth birthday. The author provides a full analysis of the context, planning, execution and significance of the event.   source: abebooks.com
