도입부
신현림(1961~)은 한국의 시인, 사진가이다. 1990년대에는 솔직한 화법과 당돌한 문제의식으로 여성의 욕망을 드러냈고, 2000년대 이후에는 타인의 삶을 위로하고 현실에 대한 책임을 강화하는 방향으로 시세계를 확장했다. 사진가로도 활동하고 있다.
생애
1961년 경기도 의왕에서 태어났다. 본래는 서양화가 지망생이었으나 대학 입시에서 여러 차례 실패한 뒤 디자인과로 진학하였다. 그러나 6개월 만에 학교를 그만두고 다시 입시를 치러 한국문학을 전공하였다.1) 20대 시절에는 심각한 불면증으로 고통받았는데, 그림과 시로부터 위안을 받으며 어려운 시기를 견뎌 나갔다고 회고한다.2)
1990년 《현대시학》에 <초록말을 타고 문득> 외 9편의 시를 선보이면서 데뷔했다. 대학원에서 비주얼아트를 전공하고, 미술, 사진 관련 저서들을 발간하며, 사진전을 여는 등 다방면의 활동을 꾸준하게 전개했다. 신현림은 시, 미술, 사진 등 여러 예술 분야를 넘나드는 전방위적인 작가로서 활동하고 있다.3)
2003년 이혼하면서 가장이 되어 딸을 홀로 키우게 되었다.4) 이후 생활고 속에서도 전업 작가로서 지속적으로 작업을 이어나갔다.5) 도서출판 사과꽃 대표로6) 한국 현대시 120년사를 점검하는 ‘한국 현대시 다시 찾기 101’ 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다.7)
작품 세계
초기 신현림의 시는 당돌하고 진솔한 화법과 문제의식을 특징으로 한다. 2010년을 전후한 시기부터는 타인의 삶을 위로하고 현실에 대한 책임을 강조하는 방향으로 시세계를 확장했다.
솔직한 화법과 당돌한 문제의식
1990년대 신현림의 시는 특유의 솔직한 화법과 당돌한 문제의식으로 세간의 시선을 끌었다. 《지루한 세상에 불타는 구두를 던져라》(1994)와 《세기말 블루스》(1996)로 대표되는 1990년대의 시에서 시인은 어둡고 지루하며 불안정한 세계와 싸워나가고자 하는 젊은 패기를 보여준다.8)
이 시기 신현림의 시는 여성의 성적인 욕망을 진솔하게 드러내며 가부장제 시스템을 비판했다.9) 《세기말 블루스》에서 시인은 시집에 자신의 누드화를 실음으로써 자신의 시적 지향을 과감하게 선언하였는데, 이 사건으로 인해 신현림은 ‘성에 대해 거침없이 말하는 30대 독신 여성’으로 매스컴의 스포트라이트를 받기도 하였다. 《세기말 블루스》는 1996년 당시 10만 부 가까이 팔려나가며 베스트셀러가 되었다.10) 이로 인해 신현림은 당대의 여성 담론을 뒤흔든 가장 전위적인 여성 시인 중 한 명으로 손꼽히게 되었다.11)
고통받는 삶에 대한 위로
이혼 직후 발간한 《해질녘에 아픈 사람》(2004)에서 시인은 현대 도시인들의 불안감, 소외감과 쓸쓸함을 드러낸다. 이러한 경향은 이전 두 시집이 보여준 시적 경향의 연장선상에 해당한다. 신현림의 시적 경향은 《침대를 타고 달렸어》(2009)부터 큰 변화를 보여준다. 허무주의적이고 비관적인 세계를 보여줬던 전작들과 달리, 한층 성숙하고 관조적인 시선으로 사람의 상처와 아픔을 위무하기 시작한 것이다.12) 고단한 삶에 대한 따스한 위안을 주조로 하는 시적 경향은 이후의 시집으로도 이어졌다. 《반지하 앨리스》(2017)에서 시인은 고통받은 사람들에게 다시 한 번 위로를 보낸다.13)
현실에 대한 책임
신현림은 ‘현실을 외면하는 시는 시가 아니다’라는 소신을 갖고 있다.14) 그는 시가 개인의 내면과 언어에 집중하던 시기는 지나가고 있으며, 앞으로의 시는 현실과 미래에 대한 고민을 담은 것이 되어야 한다고 생각한다. 이러한 시관(詩觀)은 현실에 대한 시인으로서의 책임을 다하려는 자세로 연결된다.15) 《사과꽃 당신이 올 때》(2019)에서 시인은 그가 지구의 상징이라 생각하는 사과와 사과꽃을 통해 분단의 아픔, 현 한국 사회의 어두운 단면 등 현실의 세세한 부분까지지 살피고 돌아본다.

Introduction
Shin Hyunrim (1961~) is a Korean poet and photographer. In the 1990s, Shin expressed desires of women in a straightforward and critical manner. Since the 2000s onward, she has expanded her poetry world by comforting others and taking a more responsible attitude towards the reality in her poems. She has worked as a photographer too.
Life
Shin was born in Euiwang-si, Gyeonggi Province in 1961. She loved western painting and aspired to be a painter. After failing several times in college entrance exams, however, she started to study design in college. After six months she left the school and took the college entrance examination again and majored in Korean literature. [1] She suffered from severe insomnia in her 20s; she recalls that she endured those difficult times seeking comfort in paintings and poetry. [2]
Shin made a debut in 1990 with “Chorongmareul tago mundeuk (초록말을 타고 문득 On the Back of a Green Horse) and 9 other poems which were published in Hyeondaesihak (현대시학 Modern Poetics). She majored in visual arts in graduate school and has expanded her portfolio in various fields since. She has published books on art and photography and held several photo exhibitions too. Shin is truly a multi-faceted artist playing in various fields such as poetry, art and photography.[3]
After divorce in 2003, she has raised her daughter alone.[4] Though struggling, she has continued to remain a full-time writer. [5] Now Shin is a CEO of publishing house Sagwakkot [6] and has carried out “Hanguk hyeondaesi dasichatgi 101 (한국 현대시 다시찾기 101 In Search of Korean Modern Poetry 101),” a project looking back on 120 years of Korea’s modern poetry history. [7]
Writing
Shin’s poems in early years feature a daring and straightforward speech based on a critical perspective. Since 2010, her poems have started to comfort the lives of others while emphasizing our responsibility.
Daring and straightforward speech
In the 1990s, the poems of Shin were sensational for their unique candor and audacious criticism. Represented by Jiruhan sesange bultaneun gudureul deonjyeora (지루한 세상에 불타는 구두를 던져라 Throw a Burning Shoe into a Boring World) (1994) and Segimal beulluseu (세기말 블루스 Fin-de-siecle Blues) (1996), the poems Shin wrote in the 1990s show the ambition of the youth to fight a dark, boring and unstable world. [8]
During this period, Shin criticized the male-dominated culture by expressing the genuine sexual desire of women. [9] In Segimal beulluseu, Shin boldly presents her poetic intention by putting her nude in the poetry collection. Since then, Shin has been in the spotlight as a single woman in her 30s who is not afraid of talking about sex. Segimal beulluseu sold nearly 100,000 copies in 1996 and became a bestseller. [10] This made Shin one of the most avant-garde female poets who shook the discourse on women to its foundation.[11]
Comforting the suffering souls
In Haejillyeokke apeun saram (해질녘에 아픈 사람 A Person Sick At Sunset) (2004), published shortly after her divorce, Shin tells us about a sense of anxiety, alienation, and loneliness of city dwellers. This is an extension of the poetic tendency shown by her two previous poetry collections. Her poetic style changed significantly starting from Chimdaereul tago dallyeosseo (침대를 타고 달렸어 I Ran on the Back of the Bed) (2009) onward. Unlike her previous works that showed a nihilistic and pessimistic view of the world, Shin began to console the wounds and pains of humans with a more mature and contemplative viewpoint. [12] This tendency to solace suffering souls continued in her other poetry collections published later. In Banjiha aelliseu (반지하 앨리스 Alice in a Semi-basement Flat) (2017), Shin once again gives comfort to those who are in hardships.[13]
Taking more responsibilities in reality
Shin has a belief that “A poem that turns away from reality ceases to be one anymore.”[14] She believes that the time where poetry is only about one’s inner self and language is coming to an end and poems should be concerned with the reality and future. This perspective in poetry leads to her will to take more responsibilities in reality as a poet. [15] In Sagwakkot dangsini ol ttae (사과꽃 당신이 올 때 On the Day You Come, Apple Blossom) (2019), Shin observes a sad reality in a closer look, including the division of the country and the dark side of Korean society through apples and apple blossoms, which she considers a symbol of the earth.
