This volume offers essential information and a basic framework for understanding twentieth-century Korean literature. Growing out of a continuous tradition of over 2,000 years, twentieth-century Korean literature, termed "modern Korean Literature" by Korean scholars, has been shaped by profound social and political transformations on the peninsula. Those decades of great suffering and change gave birth to poets and writers of broad vision and to works of literature that testify both to actual Korean experience within this history and to the Korean spirit of resistance and transcendence. Dieses kleine Buch möchte deutschen Lesern elementare Informationen für das Verständnis der Literatur Koreas im 20. Jahrhundert an die Hand geben, der jüngsten Produkte einer Geschichte also, die zweitausend Jahre alt ist. Es sollte eine übersichtliche und leicht fassliche Darstellung der koreanischen Literatur des vergangenen Jahrhunderts in ihren charakteristischen Tendenzen und Leistungen sein. Gegenstände sind Erzählungen und Romane sowie Lyrik, nicht aber der Essay und die Kritik, Dramen nur am Rande, Literatur in den audiovisuellen Medien bleibt unbeachtet. Von den als repräsentativ präsentierten Werken bedeutender Autoren werden eingehende Inhaltsangaben mit Hinweisen zur literaturkritischen Einordnung gegeben, mehrere Gedichte sind ganz oder in Auszügen abgedruckt. Auf eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Literatur Nordkoreas musste verzichtet werden, obwohl eine Darstellung der koreanischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts ohne sie nicht wirklich vollständig ist.

Presentamos este libro con el objetivo de proporcionar información elemental y un esquema básico sobre la literatura coreana del siglo XX. Este trabajo ha sido financiado por el Instituto de Traducción de Literatura Coreana (LTI Korea), como parte del proyecto de difusión de la literatura coreana en todo el mundo. Las obras literarias del siglo XX no son más que una parte de la larga tradición de que goza la literatura coreana, que se remonta a más de dos mil años. A pesar de ello, las creaciones literarias del siglo XX, que transcurre durante un periodo de gran transformación social llamado la “modernización”, revelan en varios aspectos diferencias fundamentales con el periodo anterior. Es, en parte por esta ruptura radical, por lo que se suele denominar a la literatura coreana del siglo XX “Literatura Coreana Moderna.” Con este libro hemos procurado, sobre todo, dar una explicación clara y comprensiva de las características principales de la literatura coreana en el siglo XX. Así, hemos dividido el siglo en cuatro periodos e introducido los escritores y obras más representativos en capítulos independientes que se inician con un sumario del contexto histórico y social. Más que intentar subrayar los debates críticos o tratar extensamente historias literarias, hemos buscado centrarnos en las propias obras literarias. Además, hemos prestado atención especial a la literatura coreana contemporánea, es decir, a las obras producidas en las décadas posteriores a los 70, y en particular, a los poetas y narradores de la última década del siglo.
