朝鮮・日本・インド・ベニスを舞台に繰り広げられる歴史小説。秀吉の朝鮮出兵により捕らえられ、日本の薩摩に連行された主人公・柳承業。家族や仲間を失った悲しみと憎しみの中でも、彼は望みを捨てず、優れた商才と勤勉さを発揮していく。やがて理解者を得て日本を発ち、ヨーロッパのベニスにたどり着くと、アントニオ・コレアと名前を変え、ベニスの商会で働くことになるが、新たな試練が待ち受けていた。数奇な運命によって近世ヨーロッパに生きた一人の東洋人の物語。
