2005 Frankfurt Book Fair: Author Cheon Un-yeong Introductory Booklet

This is an introductory booklet on Cheon Un-yeong, produced for the 2005 Frankfurt Book Fair, where Korea participated as the Guest of Honor for the first time and hosted the Korean Literature Tour Program. The author was one of the 62 delegates selected by LTI Korea’s Delegation Selection Committee on the basis of the following criteria: representativeness, existing publications of translated works, and overseas marketability. The entire literature program was co-organized by the LTI Korea, the Frankfurt Book Fair Organizing Committee, Daesan Cultural Foundation, Paradise Cultural Foundation and the International Communication Foundation (ICF). The events started at the Leipzig Book Fair in March and finished with the Guest of Honor Program in October. Cheon Un-yeong participated in literary events in April. This 21-page booklet consists of: ‘Author’s Literary World’, ‘Analysis of The Needle’, ‘Excerpt’, ‘Voices of the Author and Critics’, ‘Biography’ and ‘Bibliography’. The material was put together and analyzed by Ko Bong-jun, and translated by Elke Golchert-Jung. The photographs were taken by Han Young-hee. Cheon Un-yeong’s literary event was held in Cologne in April.

The theme of _List Vol. 21 is Korea’s Apartment Buildings. Under the four subthemes “Confessions of a Knock-off Apartment Kid from the 1980s,” “It’s the Apartment, Stupid!” “The Apartment: Mirage of the Middle Class,” and “Imagined Spaces: the Apartment in Literature,” this issue explores Korea’s housing culture through an essay by Jeong Yi Hyun, the real estate market flow, and eight literary works that feature apartment buildings. In addition, this issue features interviews with literary critic Lee O-young and novelist Chun Un-yeong, Korean publishing trends, coverage of the acceptance of Korean literature overseas, a spotlight on a literary site, book reviews of fiction/nonfiction/children’s literature, and the translation of Kim Hoon’s short story “My Sister’s Menopause" (from the Collection of the Hwang Sun-Won Literary Award-Winning Works, 2005) and introduces steady sellers, publishers, and trends in Korean literature to overseas readers.

The theme of KLN Vol. 57 is “In Search of Lost Hope.” It discusses the gap between Korean society and the hope embedded in the narrative of contemporary Korean literature and gives implications about the present state of Korean literature. The Featured Writer section presents an interview by poet Lee Sumyeong as well as 10 of her poems and an essay on Lee’s literary world. The Bookmark section features the short stories, “Half of Half on Half” by Cheon Un-yeong and “Landscapes and Love” by Wi Soo Jung, as well as four poems by You Hee-kyoung and Baek Eunsun, and the classic tale of Jeon Unchi. In the Cover Feature section, three essays by literary critics Park Hye-jin, Yiso, and Jung Hongsoo examine the way Korean literature looks at and portrays hope.
