This is an introductory booklet on novelist GU Byeong-mo, produced for literary events at the Guadalajara International Book Fair and a nearby university. In celebration of the publication of The Wizard Bakery in Spanish, GU Byeong-mo participated in literary events at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, University of Guadalajara, Autonomous University of Nayarit, and Preparatoria 15 Secondary School between November 29 and December 7. Co-organized with the publishing house Nostra, the events led to the success of the Spanish translation of The Wizard Bakery (initial print run: 10,000). This 22-page introductory booklet consists of: “Author’s Literary World”, “About the Work”, “Essay”, “Biography” and “Bibliography”.

This is a Cover Feature essay of KLN Vol. 57. Under the theme “The Distance of Hope: Arriving at Hope via Empathy,” literary critic Park Hye-jin examines the intricate relationship between hope and despair, as well as empathy and sympathy. Through an analysis of the works of Korean literature, such as Yun I-Hyeong’s Winding Bandages, Lim Solah’s “Caring for Fruit Flies,” Choi Eunyoung’s Shoko’s Smile, Someone Who Cannot Hurt Me, and Bright Night, and Park Ji-young’s Lonely Death Workshop, she explores the theme of hope portrayed through narratives of empathy and solidarity, and reflects on the contemporary literary trend of seeking ways for everyone to coexist.

The theme of KLN Vol. 65 is “A Day in the Life of a Seoulite.” In the Cover Feature essays, a writer, a novelist, and an essayist discuss the issue’s theme. The Featured Writer section presents an interview with the featured writer Son Bo-mi, her short story “The Substitute Teacher,” and a critical essay on her artistic world. The Bookmark section features the short stories “Dear My Bias” by Ryu Si-eun and “Method of Mourning” by An Boyun, as well as two poems each by Ko Sunkyung and Im Yu Young. This issue also introduces an excerpt of Record of the Virtue of Queen Inhyeon, Lady Min in English. Lastly, a team of reviewers consisting of critics, writers, translators, and an editor have written reviews of five books: Dawn of Labor by Park Nohae, Counterattacks at Thirty by Won-Pyung Sohn, The Old Woman with the Knife by Gu Byeong-mo, Veda (Farewell) by Kim Young-ha, and To the Warm Horizon by Choi Jin-Young.
