Plot

26-year-old Kubo, who studied abroad in Tokyo, is a novelist who earns only a few pennies. He's a lumpen who doesn't even think about getting a job, even though he uses not having a job as an excuse when his mother worries about his marriage in the future. Almost every day, he roams the streets of Seoul passing by Gwanggyo, Jongno Intersection, and Hwasin Department Store, meeting many people, and returning home late at night.

This is a novel by Park Tae-won, serialized in the Chosun JoongAng Ilbo from August 1 to September 19, 1934. Considered one of the achievements of Korean modernist novels in the 1930s, the descriptions of the people and the spaces of Gwanggyo, Jongno Intersection, and Gyeongseong Station are nearly a study of modernology.  In addition, the expression of the complex inner thoughts of the protagonist revealed through the stories that cross the past, future, and reality is considered a novel achievement that was rare in the 1930s.
