Plot

After injuring her ankle at her older sister’s funeral, the narrator goes to an oriental medicine clinic, but suffers a burn while receiving treatment. Rather than do something about it, she reminisces on her relationship with her late sister, with whom she had not been close. When she can no longer delay treatment for the burn on her ankle, she goes to the hospital. However, a doctor tells her that she has left it unattended for too long, and that recovery may not be possible.

This short story by Han Kang was published in her short fiction collection Fire Salamander in 2012. It was also the 24th volume of the Asia Publishers Bi-lingual Series in 2013. With the author’s characteristically dense prose style and critical mind, the story explores problems with communication and awkwardness in relationships.
